NAME: Angel Mendiola Valdeztamon

COMPANY: Earth Angel Essentials and Beatrix Café

TELL US ABOUT YOUR BUSINESS AND WHY YOU STARTED IT? Beatrix Café is a homegrown café in San Jose del Monte that I started with my sister Fay Cuadra. It started with a simple reason, we want to have a place where we can hang out with and have great coffee just nearby our home. It became a second home to us, and to our neighbors too.

Earth Angel Essentials is a Holistic Health and Wellness hub I started last year where I educate individuals and families how to incorporate natural solutions to their lifestyle the safe, effective and affordable way.

With Beatrix Café, I sell great times spent together while drinking the best homegrown coffee we have here in the Philippines + homemade dishes and desserts.

With EAE, I sell effective ways to increase your energy, boost your immune system, sleep well, stop hating so you can live as peaceful as you can be.

My target audience are primarily women, but anyone who who needs to refuel and relax, with great coffee, homemade dishes, oils and aromatherapy.

I started as a graphic artist, turned marketing officer turned Financial Advisor turned Barista and Oilbularyo. Many were surprised I’m an IT Graduate. I know there’s still a long way to go. But for now, my 3 accomplishments I made that I am proud are:

  1. Friends I made thru business transactions. No matter where you go, no matter path you take, these people are with you every step of the way.
  2. The employees that turned to families. They are great blessings. They say it is difficult to work with a family member, but co-workers who stick with you thru thick and thin, they are gems.
  3. My children’s love for the businesses I started. They understand my love and passion for all my crafts and my heart is filled with warmth coz they never let my hard work go unnoticed. They appreciate that it is part me and there is pride in their voice whenever they talk it about to other people. What more can I ask for?

My business story may not be unique at all. I know a lot of women and mothers who work hard to push through for their passion, their art, their dreams. But like what my friends always say, when you see my creations you will feel, it is crafted with love by Angel.

I am active online as @crafty_angelph. But I also manage @earth_angelph and @beatrixcafeph. Feel free to follow me for DM and updates.

How Did You Know When You Had The Right Idea?

I just know that I have the right when the ideas wont stop coming especially when I start to write down the plans (including costing)  and people I am going to work with to make it happen.

What are the things that help you stay organized throughout the day and get time for everyone and everything?

Pen, paper (I love journals) and organizing boxes. I make sure I right down the stuff I need to do for the rest of the week. I prefer writing it down because it like it is also being engraved in my head. This usually happens on Monday with my coffee. And then everyday, I prioritize the things I need to do within the day. Meet ups with supplier and their distance and availability, clients need to meet within their convenience, etc varies on my kids need for my presence. Whether it may be for school or personal reasons, my boys are on the top of my list.

I also love boxes. I put everything in a container. I make sure everything is filled. From groceries, to stationeries to ribbons. They are all in boxes! Hahhaha!

To what do you attribute your success?

I attribute my success to the people who made it possible to help me grow out of my comfort zone. I am blessed to have a husband that support me all the way. I am forever grateful to my sisters who will always tell me to stand strong and square my shoulders, pull me up and stand both of my sides so I can if I cannot. My mother and mother in law who had taught me how to love beyond myself thru their own ways. No man is an island. You will always need the right people to remind you who you are when you need it most.

Can you recollect any funny kid-work balancing stories?

Its funny but its true that you teach your kids not by what you say but by what you do. I am often surprised how my kids try to do the things I do at home and at work, exactly the way I do it! My youngest is my best bet. He roams the kitchen of the Beatrix Café like a boss and always asking with a poker face if the food going to be served is “Masarap ba yan?” We all tried our best not to laugh.

Any recommendations to Moms who dream about being entrepreneurs, but just can’t get started

Start now! Start small, start slow but do it now! This dream had been planted in your heart ever since and you had been chosen to do it. I remember the time when I was walking around the subdivision looking for the spot for Beatrix Café. I was wearing my youngest in a baby carrier, my second born who was then a two-year-old toddler on my left hand, and my eldest who was in Grade 1 at my right. I know, a mom with three young boys would choose to go straight home after fetching her son from school. But I did not. I have a goal in mind. Maybe if I did, Beatrix Café won’t be here today. You cannot turn back time. Things you will learn along the way as time goes by are priceless. So, stop asking what ifs, go ahead and start now so you will know the answers. The last person you will want to be if the person filled with regrets because you didn’t start doing what makes your heart pumping with excitement and joy. Once you see it growing right your very eyes, it is simply priceless! And don’t mind working with your baby latched on you, you’re the boss! *wink*
